Answer:

To filter out your dealership’s Internet Protocol (IP) addresses from reporting that occurs within Google Analytics, you will first need to make note of your dealership’s various addresses. If you are not familiar with how to find your IP address, please follow the instructions in this article.

Once you have completed these steps, you will need to log into your dealership’s Google Analytics account. From here, click on the Admin cogwheel (pictured below) at the bottom, right of the screen to bring up your account settings.

Next, you have the option to select the appropriate View for account and the ability to select the Filters input (previewed below).

Selecting the Filter input will take you to the View Filters subsection. Here, you can click on the red +Add Filter button (illustrated below) to create a new filter and block out your unwanted IP addresses.

Then, this will take you to the Add Filter to View page (depicted below).

To properly exclude the correct addresses, start by including a descriptive filter name in the Filter Name field of the Filter Information subsection (i.e. “Exclude Internal Traffic”). From here, you will need to set:

  • Filter Type to Predefined
  • Select Filter Type to Exclude
  • Select Source or Destination to traffic from the IP addresses.
  • Select Expression to that begin with

As the final field, IP address will house the target range of IP addresses that represent your dealership. You will need to add in the IP address you located earlier, minus the subnet portion. Doing so will ensure all traffic from this range of addresses is removed from the reporting functions of your Google Analytics account.

Before hitting save, your final settings for the filter should look something like this (minus the example IP address found in our example):

If your settings fall in line with the directions offered here, as well as the example listed above, all that is left to do is hit the blue Save button (shown above) located below the Add Filter to View portion of the page. From here, your dealership’s internal traffic will be removed from subsequent reports, thereby creating a more accurate and representative projection of your dealership’s online presence.
